Information on Medical Sheepskins

Nature's own cushion - The Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskin - providing gentle relief and support for stressed bodies.

Bedsores are also called decubitus ulcers, pressure ulcers, or pressure sores.  Bedsores most often develop when constant pressure pinches tiny blood vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin.  When skin is deprived of oxygen and nutrients for as little as an hour, areas of tissue can die and bedsores can form.

Slight rubbing or friction against the skin can cause minor pressure ulcers.  They can also develop when a patient stretches or bends blood vessels by slipping into a different position in a bed or chair.

Each year, millions of people throughout the world develop bedsores ranging from mild inflammation to deep wounds that involve muscle and bone.  This often-painful condition usually starts with shiny red skin that quickly blisters and deteriorates into open sores that can harbour life-threatening infection.

Being ill or convalescent is bad enough.  Being uncomfortable in bed or seated in your chair is doubly distressing. It is also unnecessary.

Using Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskins can reduce the main causes of bed or pressure sores, pressure and friction.

Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskins are carefully selected from the finest quality Australian Lambskins and are specially treated for long life and easy laundering.

The soft, dense, springy fleece of an Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskin absorbs pressure from immobile limbs and joints. The fleece prevents skin from creasing, and greatly reduces the risk of bedsores.

Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskin benefits are:

1. Reduction of body pressure at points of contact

2. Lower friction (compared with cotton sheets) when the skin is placed directly on the Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskin

3. The wool fibres: allow free air circulation, absorb moisture up to 34% of their dry weight without feeling wet, and wick the moisture away from the skin

Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskins have very dense, soft, springy and resilient wool fibres, which provide a cushion to distribute and relieve pressure at vulnerable pressure points on the patient's body. The wool fibres have a low friction of coefficient that provides a soft and smooth surface to reduce strain on the patient's skin and shear forces on the underlying tissue. This also provides support to the body and allows air to flow freely.

The Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskin can absorb up to 34% of its dry weight in moisture without feeling damp. The Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskin rapidly dissipates this moisture away from the source to alleviate discomfort to immobile patients from perspiration, thus reducing moisture build up at pressure points. These features make Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskins very comfortable to sit or lie on and keep the patient cool, even in tropical climates. It is the wool fibres, each individually held intact by the tanned skin of the lamb, which contribute to the sheepskin's value as a medical product. Interfaced between patient and bed, the Aussie Fleece Medical Sheepskin reduces pressure, friction and moisture, which are the primary causes of pressure sores.
